THE ELVINGTON — FLIGHT JACKET
Washed Blue
Named for the bomber base outside York.
RAF Elvington flew Halifaxes out over the North Sea from 1942 — Yorkshire lads and, later, two French squadrons, in a jacket cut short so it didn't catch in the cockpit. That's the jacket.
A cotton flight jacket, the proper shape: short, rib collar, rib cuffs, rib hem, a zip up the front and not much else. The cloth is whipcord — the steep diagonal twill the forces used on everything that had to last — washed soft before it gets to you, so it's broken in on day one and goes pale at the seams from there.
Inside it's quilted cotton twill in natural, the way old flight jackets were lined. Light enough for September, warm enough under a coat in January. Wearable eight months of the year, which is more than most jackets can say.
One mark on it — the script, embroidered beside the sleeve pocket.
