Named for a sandbank in the North Sea that doesn't show up on postcards.

No cliffs, no lighthouse, no name anyone outside a trawler crew would recognise. Just open water, and beneath it a bank that's been there since the ice left — shallow enough to turn a swell vicious, far enough out that if the weather comes in you're on your own until it passes. Men have fished it for three hundred years.

The beanie they wore wasn't fashion. It was the difference between finishing a shift and losing feeling in your ears for good.

Ours is knitted in merino wool — warm without the bulk, and it doesn't itch the way coarse wool does after an hour. Tight-gauge rib, dense enough to cut the wind before it gets through, with a turn-up deep enough to pull down over your ears without leaving a gap at the neck. One embroidered trident patch on the cuff and nothing else.

Wear it for the school run. Wear it hauling gear off a deck at 4am. Wear it long after the reason you bought it has stopped mattering.
